Sanctuary Union status declared!
We have officially declared sanctuary status for our union as Common Ground Workers United!
We working class people are under attack from the billionaire class.
They are coming for the most vulnerable among us, especially immigrants and those who use their freedom of speech in solidarity with Palestine. They want to see what arrests and deportations they can get away with while making the rest of us afraid to stand up for our rights.
The Baltimore Police Department is trying to put up these “safe place” posters in our neighborhood businesses, which not only divides LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities while putting us at greater risk by inviting more police into our spaces. it is also a shameful cooptation of a symbol of LGBTQ+ Pride that commemorates the Stonewall Rebellion against the police brutality that is inflicted on our community.
We are committed to creating real safe spaces and sanctuary by doing all we can to protect our members and our broader community, regardless of immigration status, gender, or sexuality.
We will not voluntarily cooperate with federal agents to enforce immigration laws
We will not collect personal information from our members that may be used to challenge their immigration status
We will hold “Know Your Rights” trainings and share legal resources with our members
We will collectively bargain new contract language that strengthens workplace protections for immigrant members and other vulnerable groups
We will continue to build alliances with others working to protect our communities and the undocumented, and participate in protests in response to ICE raids or employer collaboration for the sake of union-busting
We will urge our local and international union to declare itself a Sanctuary Union so that all of our members have greater protections
We will mobilize support for all Sanctuary Unions, Sanctuary Workplaces, Sanctuary Cities, Sanctuary States, and Sanctuary Campuses
